Day Trips Laos
UNESCO World Heritage town of Luang Prabang
Lost in time is the ancient former royal capital of Luang Prabang in Northern Laos. Home to about 30,000 locals and ex-Pats, this magical city is surrounded by mountains and is perched at the junction of the Mekong and Khan Rivers. In 1995 it was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site to protect the town's 32 precious historic temples, the former Royal Palace and classic French colonial buildings from being destroyed by 'progress'.
Luang Prabang's major sites in the old town can be reached by foot and so can most guesthouses or hotels. The streets are lined with restaurants, cafes, massage spas, clothing and silverware shops. And in the evenings, the main road turns into a layback, colourful night market selling Hmong handicrafts, Chinese and Vietnamese souvenirs and delicious street food.
